The Opportunity: Entreprenuership Through Acquisition
Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition (ETA) is a unique way for entrepreneurs to flex their entrepreneurship muscles rather than through traditional methods. We have been trained to think of entrepreneurs as these risk takers building something large from nothing; think Mark Zuckerburg, Elon Musk, or Bill Gates. But, in reality, there are hundreds of thousands of entrepreneurs who have built steady, successful, and thriving businesses over a successful career and seeking to move onto other ventures, opportunities, or a well-deserved retirement.
ETA provides a way to transition small businesses from one generation of leaders to the next, preserving and rewarding a career for many entrepreneurs seeking to retire. According to the US Small Business Administration, small business accounts for nearly half of the American economy. Within American small businesses, Baby Boomers own nearly 40% of those businesses, according to Forbes. With baby boomers retiring at a rate of 10,000 people daily, there exists a tidal wave supply of businesses seeking exit opportunities over the next decade to afford Baby Boomer retirement.
While many of these business owners want to retire and not think about their businesses through retirement, the desire remains for their businesses and people to be taken care of into the future. By connecting youthful entrepreneurs with these experienced business owners, we can continue on the legacy these titans of the American economic backbone have built. We are all on this journey together and can get involved through 1) becoming an entrepreneur willing to acquire these thriving businesses, 2) investing in invigorated entrepreneurs seeking their acquisition, and 3) networking small business owners willing to sell their businesses with the right entrepreneurs.
